University of Arizona - South Campus Emergency Medicine

Primary Training Sites:
Banner University Medical Center South Campus (BUMCS): 150-bed community hospital on Tucson’s south side; ~48 k ED visits/year; Level III trauma center and psychiatric-receiving facility serving a largely Latinx, border-region population.
​
Banner University Medical Center Tucson Campus (BUMCT): 500+-bed academic referral center and the only Level I trauma, burn, and pediatric trauma center in Southern Arizona; >60 k ED visits/year; quaternary subspecialty services and helicopter EMS base.
​
Rural & Community Rotations: One-month blocks at partner sites such as Banner Casa Grande, Verde Valley Medical Center (Cottonwood), Copper Queen Community Hospital (Bisbee), and Holy Cross Nogales, giving residents high-autonomy experience in critical-access and border hospitals.

Dual-site model: community ED + Level I academic center = broad pathology & procedures.
Rural, border & global health focus: structured rotations along the U.S.–Mexico border and in resource-limited international settings.

Small-cohort mentorship: 8 residents/year → tightknit “micro-family” culture within a larger UA Department of Emergency Medicine family comprised of 81 total EM residents from South Campus, University Campus, and Pediatric and Emergency Medicine Residencies. We are the only department of emergency medicine to house three residencies under one department, each with a unique aim and mission.

Innovative curriculum: Medical Spanish built into curriculum, integrative medicine pilot, Pharm Games (gamified pharmacology education), state-of-the-art UA ASTEC simulation center, longitudinal board-prep plans, new House System gamifying scholarship, service and wellness

Number of spots available – varies each year, per each elective. Please note 2 spots available.

Length of rotation – All elective rotations we offer are 4 Weeks in length.

Electives we offer are EMD 845 – Emergency Medicine/Critical Care and EMD 840 - Acute Resuscitation in Emergency Medicine Subinternship (AREM). We are also offering EMD 850A – Medical Toxicology this year.
