Career Development Tracks (CDT) are a core part of the curriculum
Ten longitudinal Career Development Tracks (CDTs) that begin in PGY-1 and deepen through PGY-4, each pairing the resident with a faculty mentor, a scholarly project, and eleven weeks of protected elective time:
· Administration
· Critical Care Medicine
· Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
· Global Health
· Integrative Medicine
· Medical Education
· Palliative Care Medicine
· Sports Medicine
· Toxicology / Addiction Medicine
· Ultrasound
Residents may also propose and develop a new track with the program director and a faculty mentor.
Fellowships Offered (if any): None program-sponsored at this time (inaugural program). Plans for development of several fellowship opportunities to start by the time the inaugural class graduates. Faculty are fellowship-trained in EMS, administration, ultrasound, sports medicine, medical education, critical care, and toxicology; graduates have access to Mayo Clinic's national fellowship infrastructure across Rochester and Jacksonville.
What Makes Your Program Unique or Special?
Inaugural Mayo Clinic Emergency Medicine residency in Arizona — established training institution with experienced faculty, yet residents get to shape the program's culture and traditions from year one. Six clinical sites give exposure to the full spectrum of emergency care (academic tertiary, county safety net, Level 1 trauma, dedicated pediatric ED, rural / IHS) without leaving the Phoenix metro. Longitudinal Career Development Tracks pair every resident with a faculty mentor and 11 weeks of protected elective time (in addition to other elective opportunities) across PGY-2 through PGY-4 (roughly 25% protected for scholarly work). Senior EM selectives allow residents the opportunity to choose to train in the EM practice setting of their choice. Two-to-one faculty-to-resident ratio at full complement.
How Do You Support Resident Wellness?
Wellness is built into the schedule.
-
9-hour shift length; 7-hours taking new patients; 2-hours for wrap up, documentation, and dedicated feedback/debrief with faculty. 1-hour of overlap on teach team shifts.
-
Each PGY class has one Wednesday per month post-conference protected off EM shifts; consistent, planned time dedicated to quality time with family, date night with spouse, class bonding, or other forms of self care.
Four weeks of paid vacation per year, protected Wednesday-morning conference time, an annual resident retreat, a 24/7 resident lounge stocked with snacks and drinks, and a travel stipend for national conference attendance and presentation (with program-paid attendance at CORD for rising chiefs and ACEP for PGY-4s).
Every resident is paired with a longitudinal mentor across all four years through an arc of orientation → skill building → leadership → launch and legacy.
Family is part of the program: partners and children are invited to milestones, included in communications, and welcomed into the cohort — including an annual family day where the ED opens for spouses to run simulated procedures and kids see where the parent works.
What Qualities Do You Value in Applicants to Your Program?
Compassion and genuine care for patients
Strong team and communication skills
Intellectual curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning
Resilience and self-awareness
The willingness and enthusiasm to help shape, not just inherit, a program's culture.
We are looking for humble “do-ers”; early career professionals who aspire to be leaders, educators, and innovators in our incredible field… no matter what clinical setting they choose to practice in after graduation.
